This is in light of anticipated obstacles stemming from increased urban migration, climate change, and an ageing population.<\/p>\n<p>This form of city planning (smart city projects) has invariably been described as <a href=\"http:\/\/smartcitiescouncil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smart<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/0,28757,2026474,00.html?iid=redirect-intelligentcities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intelligent<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/datasmart.ash.harvard.edu\/responsivecity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsive<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.100resilientcities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resilient<\/a>, and, more recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/senseable.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">senseable<\/a>. But how do these initiatives use open data to address the concerns of residents? In answering this question, we discovered projects whose originality left us speechless. Their dedication to social justice left us inspired.<\/p>\n<p>The speed at which local officials in both urban and suburban areas are working with <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/2017\/07\/05\/location-intelligence-key-citizen-centric-smart-cities-cl1\/\" target=\"_target\" rel=\"noopener\">open location data<\/a> to aid decision-making required us to update our original list. We\u2019re delighted to see even more <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/2017\/07\/05\/location-intelligence-key-citizen-centric-smart-cities-cl1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citizen-centric smart city\u00a0<\/a>projects leveraging the tools and techniques of LI.<\/p>\n<p>The list is assembled both to recognise individual accomplishments and promote more work with open data! To ensure citizen engagement with open data portals, city officials and third party partners are designing constituent-centric interfaces and applications. Here are our favourite web and mobile applications designed to help citizens navigate open data:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.makingallvoicescount.org\/project\/ansa-eap-check-my-barangay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1. Check My Barangay<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Check My Barangay, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makingallvoicescount.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making All Voices Count<\/a> project, was founded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makingallvoicescount.org\/project\/ansa-eap-check-my-barangay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former President Aquino<\/a>\u00a0of the Philippines to end corruption and poverty across the country. Check My Barangay signals a concerted effort from local governments to expand successful open data and smart city projects to more rural and suburban areas. In this case, it is focused at Barangays, the smallest governing unit in the Philippines. Citizens can now monitor budgeting and planning at a more granular level, therefore helping to increase citizen engagement and transparency simultaneously!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adresse.data.gouv.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. The National Address Base<\/a><\/strong><br \/> France\u2019s National Address Base, an open source database spearheaded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modernisation.gouv.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Secretariat for Modernization of Public Action (SGMAP)<\/a>, is a truly collaborative project. The database uses available open data from civil services and state agencies across France\u00a0<em>\u2014\u00a0<\/em>including IGN (National Geographic Institute), La Poste (a postal service company), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etalab.gouv.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etalab<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/openstreetmap.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenStreetMap France. <\/a>In fact, it also invites citizens to contribute more accurate location data in an effort to improve emergency response times, facilitate more efficient public-private partnerships, and allow for more spatial analysis of under-utilized areas. All we can say is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HM-E2H1ChJM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Aux armes, citoyens!<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/opendatabarometer.org\/barometer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3. Open Data Barometer (ODB)<\/a><\/strong><br \/> There\u2019s a lot of talk about the promise of open data projects, but do they actually deliver? That is the question for the Open Data Barometer (ODB), a <a href=\"http:\/\/webfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Wide Web Foundation<\/a> project rating governments across 115 jurisdictions on their open data projects\u2019 readiness, implementation, and impact.<\/p>\n<p>The recent release of the ODB\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/geographica.gs\/es\/blog\/4-edicion-open-data-barometer\/\" target=\"_target\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth edition<\/a>\u00a0report found an overall lack of improvement in open data projects when compared with last year. There is a much needed call to action concerning the important work that remains to be done using open data.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opengovpartnership.org\/participants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4. Open Government Partnership (OGP)<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The Open Government Partnership is a policy platform soliciting pledges from governments around the world to promote open and transparent governance. Began in 2011 by eight founding countries, the OGP today includes 75 government members and 15 sub-national governments from which\u00a0<strong>2,500\u00a0<\/strong>commitments have been solicited, promising more open and accountable governance.<\/p>\n<p>If the most recent ODB reminded us of mistakes made in 2016, then the Open Government Partnership revives our hope for 2017!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/urban.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5. Urban Data Platform<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/urban.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urban Data Platform<\/a> is an open source tool facilitating data sharing and comparative research across the European Union. The platform\u2019s interactive data visualisations provide users with ample information on a range of topics that can be explored at both local and regional level.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lavaprotocols.com\/2018\/06\/13\/iot-location-intelligence-trends-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 Internet of Things (IoT) Location Intelligence Trends in 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"transparency\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"Wrap\">\n <picture>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hsstatic.net\/BlogImporterAssetsUI\/ex\/missing-image.png\" alt=\"smart city projects\" width=\"849\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\">\n <\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"transparency-and-accountability\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Transparency and Accountability<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Among the objectives for smart city projects is to improve efficiency and these open data projects help citizens to cut through bureaucratic red tape faster than ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/local_news\/american-news-deserts-donuts-local.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1. America\u2019s Growing News Deserts<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Many Americans are still trying to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GGm0FQ6i74U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what happened<\/a> during the 2016 presidential election including the editors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbia Journalism Review (CJR)<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/local_news\/american-news-deserts-donuts-local.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAmerica\u2019s Growing News Deserts<\/a>\u201d, CJR editors initially built a data visualisation map which identified local newspaper offices across the country that are left. They did this by using data provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/auditedmedia.com\/data\/data-distribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alliance for Audited Media (AAM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, as readers soon pointed out, many more local newspapers nationwide had closed following the AAM\u2019s 2015 report. In response, the editors turned to their fellow Americans to crowdsource more accurate location data related to subsequent closures across the country. A reminder that we really are stronger together.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/co\/app\/elapedia\/id1233446700?l=en&#038;mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. Elapedia App<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The Elapedia app\u00a0\u2014 a free Spanish-language app resulting from a joint venture between the <a href=\"http:\/\/cipe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/governanceconsultants.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governance Consultants\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 aims to increase transparent corporate governance among the <a href=\"http:\/\/alianzapacifico.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacific Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The app makes use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/2017\/07\/prweb14506593.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public data<\/a> from Latin American companies providing confidence to potential investors as well as transparency on public-private partnerships. \u201cThe Elapedia App is intended to promote transparency and accountability,\u201d states Andrew Wilson, CIPE managing director and \u201clevels the playing field, and encourages the disclosure or elimination of conflicts of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/action\/gender-equality\/SiteAssets\/Pages\/equalsGDImap\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3. Gender Digital Inclusion Map<\/a><\/strong><br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EQUALS<\/a>, a global initiative promoting digital gender equality, is amplifying women in tech around the world with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/action\/gender-equality\/SiteAssets\/Pages\/equalsGDImap\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gender Digital Inclusion Map<\/a>. In collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equals.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Telecommunications Union\u00a0(ITU)<\/a> agency, this open data project focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Sustainable Development Goal 5\u00a0<\/a>in its objective to close the gender digital divide by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.participatorybudgeting.org\/pb-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4. Participatory Budgeting Map<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makingallvoicescount.org\/project\/ansa-eap-check-my-barangay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check My Barangay<\/a>, the Participatory Budgeting Project believes that community members should be involved in deciding how best to allocate public funding. The data visualisation highlights current and past projects and conveys pertinent information about upcoming events. It is a great resource for keeping citizens engaged and informed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ugandarefugees.org\/analysis\/emergency-influx-pattern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5. Refugee Influx Trend<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Built with <a href=\"http:\/\/data2.unhcr.org\/en\/situations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open data<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ugandarefugees.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda Refugee Response Portal<\/a> provides a granular view of the impact that refugee migration has had upon Uganda. This is not only an important project using open data to raise awareness of this ongoing humanitarian crisis, but also a brilliant demonstration of the granular insights to be found using <a href=\"https:\/\/carto.com\/blog\/four-spatial-analysis-techniques-boost-outcomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spatial analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"performance\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"Wrap\">\n <picture>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/static.hsstatic.net\/BlogImporterAssetsUI\/ex\/missing-image.png\" alt=\"smart city projects\" width=\"849\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\">\n <\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"performance-management\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Performance Management<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Local governments have adopted and adapted the service industry\u2019s motto, \u201cThe customer is always right,\u201d with the help of open data. Check out the examples below to see how open data ensures that the <em>constituent<\/em> is always right!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cwscms.osi.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1. Child Welfare Digital Services Project<\/a><\/strong><br \/> This project\u00a0\u2014 which is based in<a href=\"https:\/\/cwds.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> California<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is not only a smart city project addressing social problems, but it is also a pilot programme for more agile open data practices. Unlike the state\u2019s past \u201cpredictive waterfall\u201d approach, an \u201cadaptive agile\u201d approach involves continuous planning based upon <a href=\"https:\/\/carto.com\/blog\/four-analytic-types-shaping-location-data-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data analytics<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carto.com\/blog\/four-analytic-types-shaping-location-data-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spatial analysis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/quora\/2017\/09\/06\/ten-things-everyone-should-know-about-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">machine learning<\/a>. We\u2019re excited to see more open data projects addressing social issues by moving beyond a \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d model while addressing the specific needs of specific individuals.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/denpeakacademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. Denver Peak Academy<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Denver, Colorado has officially leaned in to data-driven government with mobile and web apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergov.org\/pocketgov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pocketgov denver<\/a>, but these projects are only as strong as the team behind the scenes. <a href=\"https:\/\/denpeakacademy.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver Peak Academy<\/a> is a training programme for city employees to learn how to use new tools and resources, therefore allowing the city to achieve \u201cpeak performance\u201d in many of its open data smart city projects!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/opportunity\/poverty-in-nyc\/poverty-in-nyc.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3. Poverty in NYC<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/opportunity\/about\/about-nyc-opportunity.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor\u2019s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity)<\/a> built the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/newsgraphics\/2014\/01\/05\/poverty-map\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poverty in NYC map<\/a> as a resource to better target and launch anti-poverty initiatives. This project furthers the city\u2019s goal of making equity a core component of local government by using open data from the New York City portion of the American Community Survey (ACS) as well as additional variables added by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/opportunity\/poverty-in-nyc\/poverty-measure.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poverty Research Team<\/a>. It is a great example of open data being used to address social inequality.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/savvycitizenapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4. Savvy Citizen Alerts<\/a><\/strong><br \/> What\u2019s novel about Management Science Associates\u2019 (MSA) mobile app, Savvy Citizen Alerts, is its suburban focus on townships like Richland, Pennsylvania. These suburbs are\u00a0looking to increase engagement with constituents by leveraging location data and smart devices like their urban counterparts. Glad to see more attention paid to rural areas when it comes to open data projects!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/smartdublin.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5. Smart Dublin<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Did you hear the news? The Irish are <em>going<\/em> green thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/dublinked.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dublinked<\/a>, Ireland\u2019s open data platform for smart city project. The Dublin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dublincity.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Council<\/a> has also prioritised projects that make use of sensors to enhance mobility, energy, and various operations throughout the city to help reduce the city\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/smartcitiesconnect.org\/smart-dublin-uses-sensors-and-open-data-platform-for-environmental-benefit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtcsnv.com\/press-archive\/rtc-waycare-announce-first-ever-u-s-partnership-to-help-prevent-road-crashes-traffic-congestion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6. RTC Accident Prediction<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is partnering with <a href=\"http:\/\/waycaretech.com\/#about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waycare<\/a> to combat traffic congestion using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtech.com\/biz\/Las-Vegas-to-Pilot-WayCares-Accident-Prediction-Artificial-Intelligence-Software.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>. Instead of responding to traffic incidents that cause delays along state highways, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevadadot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nevada\u2019s Department of Transportation (NDOT)<\/a> along with the state\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nevadacam.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Advanced Mobility (NCAM)<\/a>\u00a0will pilot a programme that uses predictive analytics to anticipate traffic congestion. In fact, it will also provide commuters with alternate routes. We look forward to seeing how this first of its kind open data project turns out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/openplanetarymap.org\/#3\/11.80\/-45.04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7. Open Planetary Maps<\/a><\/strong><br \/> This entry takes an admittedly long-term view when it comes to open data as it uses satellite imagery to map Mars. The projects below make use of open data, and in some cases are <em>literally<\/em> changing what it means to be data-<em>driven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blindsquare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1. BlindSquare<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Initiatives like <a href=\"http:\/\/smartcities4all.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart Cities For All<\/a> have helped draw attention to the need for more inclusive smart city projects like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blindsquare.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BlindSquare<\/a>. Using data from <a href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foursquare\u00a0<\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=4\/38.01\/-95.84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenStreetMap<\/a>, this navigation app provides audio directions for visually impaired residents to move around their cities more easily.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/transit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. Connect 305<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Similar to major metropolitan cities like New York and London, the Mayor\u2019s Office of Miami-Dade County, Florida, in partnership with organisations including AT&#038;T, Cisco, and Intel, is launching Connect 305. It is a connectivity project that will install 305 Wi-Fi Kiosks across the county.<\/p>\n<p>The large scale of this undertaking is intended to better prepare the city for anticipated infrastructural pressures, increased demand for city services, and other operational issues which come with the rise in urban population due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/map.greenway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3. East Coast Greenway Map<\/a><\/strong><br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenway.org\/about\/the-east-coast-greenway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The East Coast Greenway Alliance<\/a> recently launched this web app that not only facilitates tourism but also promotes environmental conservation across 15 states and more than 450 cities and towns along the United States eastern seaboard. The interactive data visualisation allows visitors to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greeninfo.org\/finding-our-way-on-the-greenway-ee2262b67319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">map the best hiking trails and bike routes<\/a> all along the greenway starting at any entry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/airmap-and-kansas-department-of-transportation-partner-to-deploy-unmanned-traffic-management-technology-statewide-300500860.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4. Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) Initiative<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdot.org\/bureaus\/divAviation\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT)<\/a> is taking to the skies with aerial drones to help local officials manage traffic congestion. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airmap.com\/airmap-platform-kansas-kdot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first of its kind partnership<\/a>, KDOT and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airmap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AirMap<\/a> are working together to use drones across the state to optimise disaster recovery, emergency response time, agriculture, construction, and much more. We\u2019re excited to see how this project evolves throughout 2018!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mapzen.com\/blog\/map-matching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5. Map Matching<\/a><\/strong><br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/mapzen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mapzen<\/a> is innovating data-driven navigation with its newest mobility services offering, <a href=\"https:\/\/mapzen.com\/blog\/map-matching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Map Matching<\/a>. With this mobility app, users can enter their destination\u2019s coordinates and be matched with a route snapped on to an OpenStreetMap. They can also be provided with enriched routes signaling <a href=\"https:\/\/mapzen.com\/documentation\/mobility\/map-matching\/api-reference\/#attribute-filters-trace_attributes-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-selected attributes<\/a> such as speed limits and freeway exit signs. A great use of open data to confront mobility issues!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/busturnaround.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6. Turnaround: Fixing New York City\u2019s Buses<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"http:\/\/busturnaround.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bus Turnaround Coalition<\/a>, with support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/transitcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TransitCenter<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridersny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Riders Alliance<\/a>, is using open data to raise awareness about <a href=\"https:\/\/carto.com\/blog\/could-these-location-based-bus-improvements-fix-NYC-transit-woes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the state of New York City\u2019s bus system<\/a>. Although nearly 2.5 million riders take the bus each day and despite an ever-growing residential population, the city has not made the necessary updates to the system to maintain optimal service.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the Bus Turnaround Coalition has assigned each route a report card using <a href=\"http:\/\/bustime.mta.info\/wiki\/About\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTA Bus time data<\/a> reflecting speed, accuracy, and ridership volume among other factors to help local official prioritise their response.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ecosystems.azurewebsites.net\/WECC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7. WECC Environmental Data Viewer<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wecc.biz\/Pages\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC)<\/a> is a non-profit organisation maintaining a massive electric system across the Western Interconnection, a geographic area comprised of two Canadian provinces, 14 US states, and Northern Baja, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The WECC Environmental Data Viewer is an interactive data visualisation of area built with open data provided by participating government agencies. It was spearheaded by <a href=\"http:\/\/shpo.nv.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nevada\u2019s State Historic Preservation Office<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/heritage.utah.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Utah Department of Heritage and Arts. <\/a>It\u00a0also includes open data from participating states including <a href=\"http:\/\/wyoshpo.state.wy.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wyoming<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/connect\/office-archaeology-historic-preservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dahp.wa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is a great web mapping application that provides access to environmental and cultural risk classification across the Western Connection to facilitate regional expansion projects across city, state, regional, and even national borders.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wowboston.space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8. Who Owns What (W.O.W.) Boston<\/a><\/strong><br \/> This <a href=\"https:\/\/data.boston.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analyze Boston<\/a> project began with one main question: was it possible to see a \u201crenter class\u201d (people who rent a property, rather than own it) becoming an \u201cowner class\u201d in the city of Boston? But once project founders Alex Dillon and Joana Abreu started mapping <a href=\"https:\/\/data.boston.gov\/dataset\/property-assessment\/resource\/062fc6fa-b5ff-4270-86cf-202225e40858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Property Assessment<\/a> data, they soon realised that visualising one simple relationship \u2014 who owns what \u2014 provided insights into patterns and trends shaping the entire city. InfoAmazonia Colombia<\/a><\/strong><br \/> The <a href=\"http:\/\/colombia.infoamazonia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InfoAmazonia Colombia<\/a> platform is a transparency tool to help Colombian officials reduce forest clearing to zero net levels by 2030 as part of the country\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/earthinnovation.org\/our-work\/case-studies\/colombias-amazon-vision-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Vision Program<\/a>. The platform uses open data from satellite information, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideam.gov.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies (IDEAM)<\/a>, and data crowdsourced from <a href=\"https:\/\/infoamazonia.org\/es\/2017\/09\/espanol-tres-carreteras-que-amenazan-al-pulmon-mas-grande-del-planeta\/#!\/map=49&#038;story=post-17045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data journalists<\/a>. This transparency platform alerts citizens to new construction projects threatening the Amazon\u2019s ecosystem, therefore helping ensure smarter, healthier alternatives for cities and rain forests alike.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cphsolutionslab.dk\/energyblock-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. EnergyBlock<\/a><\/strong><br \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/cphsolutionslab.dk\/#what-we-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagen Solutions Lab<\/a> is pioneering sustainability efforts with this latest smart city project. <a href=\"http:\/\/cphsolutionslab.dk\/energyblock-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EnergyBlock<\/a> will use sensors to monitor energy production levels <em>as well as<\/em> local food production in rooftop greenhouses and gardens across Copenhagen\u2019s \u201cNordvest\u201d area. The data from these sensors will be shared via Copenhagen\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/opendata.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open data portal<\/a> in an attempt to showcase renewable energy sources available within existing urban areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mayorschallenge.bloomberg.org\/ideas\/santiago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3. Juntos Santiago<\/a><\/strong><br \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saludstgo.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santiago Salud<\/a> is using gamification to tackle Santiago\u2019s obesity problem. Chile ranks fifth highest in obesity among nations worldwide. This led its Mayor Felipe Alessandri and his office to propose Juntos Santiagos, a competitive game which rewards teams of school-aged children who collectively show signs of healthier diets and more exercise.<\/p>\n<p>The project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.org\/blog\/santiago-tackles-childhood-obesity-gamification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2016 winner of the Bloomberg\u2019s Mayor\u2019s Challenge<\/a> will crowdsource data from participating teams and share the results in an going effort to promote a healthier, more active style of living to school age children.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.mit.edu\/groups\/open-agriculture-openag\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4. Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAg)<\/a><\/strong><br \/> Open Agriculture is the latest project coming from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.media.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT Media Lab\u00a0<\/a>aiming to create an open-sourced food technologies ecosystem for a healthier, smarter tomorrow.
