{"id":2433,"date":"2019-02-28T10:34:11","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T10:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/devbloglavaprotocols.nityo.in\/doing-more-than-just-using-metal-straws-and-recyclable-bags\/"},"modified":"2024-10-10T08:23:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T08:23:00","slug":"doing-more-than-just-using-metal-straws-and-recyclable-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lavaprotocols.com\/the-cloud-blog\/doing-more-than-just-using-metal-straws-and-recyclable-bags\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing More Than Just Using Metal Straws And Recyclable Bags"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that Malaysia produces <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2018\/09\/09\/green-ways-to-manage-waste-swcorp-goes-for-green-technology-and-educating-the-young\/\"><b>38,000 metric tonnes<\/b><\/a><b> of waste daily<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And where do they go?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% goes through waste separation and recycling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remaining 76% goes to landfills. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above statistics was quoted by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin in an article by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2018\/09\/09\/green-ways-to-manage-waste-swcorp-goes-for-green-technology-and-educating-the-young\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Star<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question is, <\/span><b>what are we going to do when we run out of landfill space? <\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some might say:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d be dead by then, so I don\u2019t really care.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe government or relevant authorities will figure it out.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not my problem.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of us have this don\u2019t-care-worry-later mindset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">What Do We Do?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, we have made some efforts to manage rubbish more responsibly. Examples include the various initiatives taken to reduce plastic usage:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ban on plastic bags and polystyrene food containers (started in Sept 2017)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ban on plastic straws (effective Jan 1, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sale of reusable shopping bags at hypermarkets and supermarkets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charge of RM0.20 to purchase plastic bags over the counter. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2018\/09\/20\/ban-on-plastic-straws-in-kl-putrajaya-and-labuan-next-year-to-protect-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Star<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2018\/09\/22\/plastic-straw-ban-effective-2020-ministry-clarifies\/1675334\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Malay Mail<\/span><\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is a good first step initiated <\/span><b><i>by the government<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it would take much more than just reducing plastic usage to save our environment. In fact, it would require the effort of the entire nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Using Technology to Save the Planet<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aware of this pertinent issue, Lava Protocols wanted to get its employees involved in managing waste responsibly. We heard about iCYCLE, a solution provider in waste separation and recycling. What piqued our interest was the fact that they use technology as a platform for recycling and operated using a reward system. Its founder, Dr Tan Ching Seong, came up with the idea when he was advocating recycling to his neighbours back in Pulau Pangkor. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of iCYCLE is simple:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every KG\/unit of recyclable you send to them, you get recycle points (RP). These RPs can be exchanged\/ redeemed for merchandises\/ cash voucher\/ is convertible to cash.
