Well actually, I\u2019m petrified. But, who isn\u2019t? Growing up, all we see in movies is the portrayed ascendancy of artificial intelligence (AI) and our inevitable conflict with it. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix, Space Odyssey, The Terminator<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are examples of this. They portray a darker side of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it can outsmart humans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is essentially a machine invented by man with intellectual capabilities similar to, or in some cases, far more advanced than humans. It is very much like a computer which is able to think for itself. Cool huh?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the late physicist Stephen Hawking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paulrodgers\/2014\/12\/03\/computers-will-destroy-humanity-warns-stephen-hawking\/#7bdab0df3e0d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that once humans fully develop AI, \u201cit will take off on its own and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate. He added,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHumans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn\u2019t compete, and would be superseded.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was quoted in an article by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/07\/16\/musk-says-a-i-is-a-fundamental-risk-to-the-existence-of-human-civilization.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNB<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying that AI may constitute a \u201cfundamental risk to the existence of human civilization\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We explore 3 ways AI is already doing this below: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>1. Outsmarting Existing Systems<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, AI can be programmed to fool less advanced systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take the example of the Captcha test. When logging onto a website, the system would require the user to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-41775968\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify letters, digits, symbols or objects that have been distorted or animated in some way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something which a robot would find difficult to do accurately. After all, machines don\u2019t have the human ability to pick up visual cues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not until now. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-41775968\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there are now artificially intelligent machines which can mimic the way a human brain identifies images. What this means is that fake accounts can be created by machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>2. Political Manipulation <\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at the world of politics, you can see that we are getting manipulated so easily, and it\u2019s not always by humans. Believe it or not, AI can now be used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/611832\/future-elections-may-be-swayed-by-intelligent-weaponized-chatbots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manipulate <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voters\u2019 decisions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on voters\u2019 behavior on social media, their consumption patterns, and relationships with different individuals, AI can send different voters different messages. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-artificial-intelligence-conquered-democracy-77675\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people who are paranoid about whether they are making the right choice by voting for candidate A would receive ads that instill fear in them. On the other hand, people who are conservative in their thinking would receive ads which center on tradition and community. Sometimes it\u2019s fake, yet it can be extremely convincing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI can behave just like a human by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/611832\/future-elections-may-be-swayed-by-intelligent-weaponized-chatbots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liking, sharing, retweeting, commenting, and following<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you on social media,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to bring your attention to particular viewpoints. This means it can be used to amplify negative messages on social media about candidate A to a demographic group more likely to vote for them. The idea here is to discourage them from voting for that candidate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>3. Deep Fakes<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not all that AI can do. There\u2019s also something known as \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bE1KWpoX9Hk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep fakes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Deep fakes are videos that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/techtank\/2019\/02\/14\/artificial-intelligence-deepfakes-and-the-uncertain-future-of-truth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showcase a person saying or doing something, which they never actually said or did in reality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is basically a fake video created using AI. Such videos can be used in the political industry whereby the videos are manipulated to show political candidates saying things that could harm the other candidate\u2019s\/ their own chances in the election. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have seen the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cQ54GDm1eL0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video of Barack Obama <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was released in April 2018 and has garnered over 5.8 million views (at the time this article was written). It shows the former US president throwing offensive statements towards the current US president, Donald Trump. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many of you may argue that this video is unbelievably realistic, it\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/09\/11\/deep-fakes-obama-video\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep fake made by actor-director Jordan Peele<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who mimicked Obama\u2019s voice. The whole purpose of creating the video was to create awareness about the existence (and dangers) of fake audio and video content out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows the extent to which AI can trick us. Never fall for a video or a photo without checking your facts with other credible sources first. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>Every Coin Has Two Sides<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is not all bad. It offers tremendous benefits to us humans as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start off, it can screen incoming calls from telemarketers, operate our appliances, drive our cars for us, and recommend shows on Netflix that we may like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI also acts as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">security blanket.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is now used in CCTV cameras at home to detect <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/highmark-security\/artificial-intelligence-for-cctv-cameras-95af6b2f726f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postures, angles, positions, and movements<\/a> that are out of the ordinary. Its facial recognition capability can help simplify the jobs of policemen and security officers with regard to crime investigations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it can filter through our emails for spam messages and craft our messages for us. If you\u2019re a G Suite user, you would have noticed the auto-complete email feature, Smart Compose. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/g-suite\/work-reimagined-new-ways-to-collaborate-safer-smarter-and-simpler-with-g-suite\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Google wrote that it can even \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insert personalized information like your office or home address, so you don\u2019t need to spend time in repetitive tasks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is also used in businesses to identify patterns from data and extract relevant insights. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lavaprotocols.com\/2018\/06\/11\/introducing-the-supercharged-sales-cloud-einstein-predictions-insights-and-productivity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salesforce Einstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an example of this. It is like a smart CRM assistant that can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predict which sales leads and opportunities will convert, and resolve customer issues with minimal human supervision. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is also being used to alleviate traffic issues in big cities such as Maryland, US. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their \u201cAI traffic system is projected to reduce commute time for 700,000 drivers by 15 percent\u201d writes Dan London in the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/3279546\/powering-ai-for-government.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CIO<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could go on and on about the marvel that is AI. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended reading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lavaprotocols.com\/2019\/02\/11\/basics-of-machine-learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All You Need To Know About Machine Learning<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><b>What Must We Do?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s crucial for us to note is the main distinction between AI and humans. AI does not possess our human conscience and therefore can\u2019t differentiate between what\u2019s right and wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why humans play a central role in controlling the usage of AI. Our actions dictate whether AI is used for the betterment of mankind or the opposite. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the ways to accomplish this is through good regulation. A code of ethics alone is not good enough, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/oct\/28\/regulate-ai-new-laws-code-of-ethics-technology-power\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes Paul Chadwick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reader\u2019s Editor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a journal article entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/full\/10.1098\/rsta.2018.0089#d3e434\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constitutional democracy and technology in the age of artificial intelligence<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Paul Nemitz, the Principal Adviser in the European Commission writes that \u201cAI cannot and will not serve the public good without strong rules in place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nemitz made a very good point by saying AI is \u201c\u2026<\/span><i>largely developed and deployed <\/i><i>under the<\/i><i> control<\/i><i> of the<\/i><i> most powerful Internet technology corporations<\/i>\u2026And it is these powerful Internet technology corporations which have <i>already demonstrated that they cannot be trusted to pursue public interest on a grand scale<\/i> without the hard hand of the law\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akin to how religion or national constitutions create order and justice in our world, the right legislation will enable AI to help humans within predefined boundaries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When given the opportunity, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/3279546\/powering-ai-for-government.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI can do wonders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for us \u2013 governments can speed up the process of attending to public comments, improve taxpayer experience, mitigate fraud, help the visually impaired, and even help refugees with their personal identity record. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulation and AI education are the two keys things we need. Once we have these in place, AI can work <\/span><b><i>alongside<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> us, rather than <\/span><b><i>against<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p><i>Lava is a cloud service provider and an expert in all things cloud and IT related such as AI.
